Like this Blog in 3 minutes or the Terrorists win!
February 7, 2014
Facebook has always been a place for everything from pictures of your kids to pictures of your food and regrettable selfies.
In the last year or so we’ve seen the proliferation of posts with a young cancer patient, firefighter in a heroic pose or cute puppy with the tagline of “Let’s get a million likes for this child/puppy/firefighter or you are a heartless cretin and the terrorists win!” My favorite is the one that says “Like this post in 3 minutes if you hate cancer or ignore it if you don’t!” Trust me; there are few folks in the world that hate cancer more than I do.
The reality is this. By liking and sharing these, you’ve just joined a list with the other million well intended people and congratulations, you are now advertising fodder. Ever wonder how you got on a list for some random (and often inappropriate or irrelevant) website or product? Sorry folks, but that “Share this for a chance at a free iPad” is a scam and my friends are filling my timeline with their likes and shares. If it is too good to be true…..you know the rest. These lists are sold to lazy marketers and your page becomes a bought and sold commodity. That Justin Bieber unOfficial Fan Page…Same thing.
I am now seeing this alarming trend on LinkedIn as well. People in my network that are successful, well-educated and inspirational are joining the thousands of people answering the word jumble post of “Share the first word you see” or “Comment with a word that starts with A and ends with E”. I appreciate the need for a brain-teaser-as-distraction break like anyone else but I’m sure there is an app for that.
I hope that at some point this trend too will pass, if we can just get our collective virtual friends to stop liking posts to cure cancer, then maybe the terrorists won’t win.
